If you strike a tree buttress with a parang, the male kuai (great argus pheasant) will sometimes respond with a loud kwow-wow call. Otherwise the pheasants used to regularly kwow-wow at 7pm, 9pm, 11pm, 2am and 4am, the last call known as teka rema by local Penan communities: well-paced enough to keep time through the night. Now with less forest, the pheasants kwow-wow less regularly - time out of joint.
